Start with the movements you are trying to separate. Direct the flow: entrance and exit only, one-way arrows, do-not-enter at the bus loop. Separate the users: buses only, no student drop-off in this lane, student drop-off and pick-up with directional arrows, parent waiting area. Control the parking: visitor parking, staff parking, reserved, handicap accessible, no parking fire lane. Set the rules: speed limit, stop, pedestrian crossing, and school property notices such as no trespassing, drug-free zone, or surveillance in use. Most schools find the gaps are in the second group — the lanes are marked but the users are not separated.

Both are retroreflective, meaning they bounce headlight light back toward the driver rather than scattering it. Engineer-Grade Reflective (EGR) on 0.063" aluminum is the standard specification and is appropriate for most parking lot and building signage where traffic moves slowly and there is some ambient light. High-Intensity Prismatic (HIP) on 0.080" aluminum uses a prismatic lens structure that returns substantially more light, so the sign reads brighter and from farther away. HIP is worth the upgrade for stop control, pedestrian crossings, unlit lots, and anywhere buses or parent traffic move after dark.

Aluminum does not rust, and our reflective vinyls are UV-protected, so a properly mounted sign carries an expected outdoor durability of 7+ years before fading becomes noticeable. In practice the sign face usually outlives its mounting — posts get hit, brackets loosen, and hardware corrodes long before the vinyl gives out. If you are replacing signs on a cycle, budget for posts and mounting hardware separately rather than assuming they will be reused.

12" x 18" is the standard for parking space designations, directional arrows within a lot, and messages read at low speed from close range. 18" x 24" is the standard for lane direction, drop-off and bus loop separation, and anything a driver needs to read while moving. For messages that must be readable across an open lot or at a driveway entrance, go larger — we make signs to order in non-standard sizes and shapes in our own shop, so a 24" x 36" or a custom dimension is not a special-order problem.
