Brooms & Dustpans

It depends on the floor type and debris. For smooth hard floors (VCT tile, polished concrete, gymnasium wood): a soft-bristle push broom collects fine dust and debris without scratching. For rough surfaces (outdoor walkways, loading docks, shop floors): a stiff-bristle push broom handles heavier debris like gravel, leaves, and wet soil. For classrooms with mixed debris (paper, food crumbs, pencil shavings on VCT): a combination or medium-bristle broom is the most versatile. Most school custodial departments stock both soft and stiff options and assign them by area.

In a school environment with daily use, broom heads typically need replacement every 2 to 4 months depending on the surface type and how aggressively they’re used. Signs it’s time: bristles are splayed, bent, or worn down to less than half their original length; the broom is pushing debris around rather than collecting it; or the bristle block is cracking or separating from the head. Replacement broom heads are significantly cheaper than full brooms — buying heads in bulk at the start of the school year ensures custodians always have a fresh head available.

An upright broom and dustpan combo (where the dustpan attaches to a long handle and stands upright) is the standard classroom choice. The long-handle design eliminates bending, which matters when custodians are sweeping 20+ rooms per shift. Look for a dustpan with a rubber lip edge that sits flush against the floor to capture fine dust. Combos that store together (the broom clips to the dustpan handle) are easier to organize in custodial closets and less likely to be separated.

For gymnasium floors, a 24" to 36" wide push broom is standard. The wide head covers more floor area per pass, which matters on a full-size basketball court. Use soft or fine bristles only on finished wood gym floors as stiff bristles can scratch the finish. For daily dust sweeping before mopping, a treated dust mop is actually more effective than a push broom on finished gym floors; reserve the push broom for heavier debris cleanup after events and assemblies.

Three things to match: connection type, head width, and bristle type. Connection type is the most important: replacement broom heads connect to handles via screw-in threads, push-in friction fit, or bolt-through attachment. Measure the handle diameter and check the thread type before ordering. Head width should match your cleaning area: 12" to 18" for classrooms and tight spaces, 24" to 36" for hallways and large open areas.
