The convention that causes the fewest problems is a three-digit system where the first digit is the floor and the remaining two run sequentially along the hallway — 101 through 118 on the first floor, 201 onward on the second. Keep numbering direction consistent between floors so a room's position is predictable from its number alone, and number every space, not just classrooms; offices, storage, and mechanical rooms need identification too. Two additions worth making: post the room number on the corridor side of the door at a consistent height, and number exterior doors on the outside of the building so emergency responders can be directed to a specific entry point.

Ceiling-hung signs are designed to be lightweight specifically so they can be supported from a suspended ceiling grid rather than the structural deck. The sign hangs on hooks or cable from the T-bar grid, positioned perpendicular to the direction of travel so people read the face as they walk toward it rather than passing it edge-on. Because ceiling hung signs are double-sided, one sign serves both directions of a hallway. They are the most effective option for large open spaces — commons, cafeterias, media centers — where wall signage disappears at distance.

Use interchangeable magnetic signs or a change-out slot design. The permanent portion carries the room number, which never changes, while a magnetic or slide-in insert carries the teacher name or room function, which does. Replacing the insert costs a fraction of replacing the sign, and it keeps the hallway looking consistent instead of accumulating taped-up paper labels. For rooms that change several times within a single year — a space used for testing, then conferences, then a club — a hanging door handle sign is faster still.

Permanent room identification signage, including restrooms, is generally required under the ADA to include raised characters and Grade 2 braille, mounted at a specified height on the latch side of the door.
